What Happens During a Breathwork Session? A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re new to breathwork, it’s completely normal to wonder:

What actually happens in a session?
Will I know what to do?
What if I’ve never done anything like this before?

This post will walk you through exactly what to expect, so you can feel more at ease stepping into your first breathwork experience.

A Space to Slow Down and Drop In

Whether you’re attending a group session or working 1:1, every breathwork experience begins by creating a space that feels safe, grounded, and supportive.

We start slowly and gently.

While every session is unique, there is a structure that helps you feel supported from beginning to end.

We begin by arriving in the space together.

In group workshops, I’ll introduce the theme of the session and what we’ll be exploring. In 1:1 sessions, this is a space for you to share what’s been coming up for you, what you’re moving through, and what you’d like support with.

This helps guide the energy of the session and creates a foundation that feels personal and intentional.

What to Expect (Especially if You’re New)

If you’re new to breathwork, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know.

We’ll talk about:

  • What you might experience physically or emotionally

  • How to move through sensations or resistance

  • How to stay connected to your body throughout the session

This is also where I remind you that you are always in control of your experience.

Learning the Breath

Next, I’ll guide you through the breath pattern we’ll be using.

This is typically a connected, rhythmic breath, without pauses between the inhale and exhale.

You’ll have a chance to practice and get familiar with it before we begin.

Setting Your Intention

Before we drop in, you’ll be invited to set an intention.

This doesn’t have to be anything big or specific.
It can be a feeling, a question, or simply a willingness to be open to whatever arises.

There’s no pressure to have the “perfect” intention. Simply arriving as you are is enough.

Settling In

You’ll then lie down and get comfortable.

You might use a blanket, pillow, or anything that helps you feel supported and at ease.

This is your space to relax fully.

This is a moment to check in with yourself:

  • How are you feeling?

  • What are you moving through?

  • What do you want to open yourself to?

Guided Meditation

We begin with a short meditation to help you land in your body and arrive in the present moment.

This allows the mind to soften and creates space for you to drop deeper into the experience.

Active Breathwork (with Music)

From here, we move into the active breathing portion of the session.

You’ll be guided to breathe continuously to music that supports the rhythm and energy of the journey.

This is where the shift begins.

As you stay with the breath, you may experience:

  • Sensations in the body

  • Emotions rising or moving through

  • A sense of release or expansion

  • Or simply a deeper state of calm and connection

There’s no right or wrong experience. Your body leads the way.

Stillness & Integration

After the active breathing, you’ll release the breath and return to a natural rhythm.

This is a time of stillness.

Your body begins to integrate everything that’s shifted, and you’re invited to simply rest and allow the energy to settle.

Grounding & Returning

From there, I’ll gently guide you back.

You’ll reconnect with your body, the space around you, and slowly begin to reawaken, eventually coming back up to a seated position.

Reflection & Optional Sharing

At the end, you’ll have a few minutes to journal or reflect on anything that came up for you.

In group sessions, there is also space for optional sharing.

You’re always invited to share, but never required to.

A Reminder:

You don’t need to do anything perfectly.

You don’t need to force an experience.

You just need to show up, breathe, and allow your body to guide you.
